UW–Madison Signs MOU with Republic of Kazakhstan (March 2010)

University of Wisconsin–Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement with members of a delegation from the New University of Astana in the Republic of Kazakhstan during a meeting in Martin’s office on March 4, 2010. Pictured left to right are Gilles Bousquet, dean of UW–Madison’s Division of International Studies; Yerbol Orynbayev, deputy prime minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan; Martin; Aslan Sarinzhipov, CEO of the New University of Astana; and Uli Schamiloglu, UW–Madison professor and chair of Central Asian Studies. The MOU pledges a feasibility study, led by the UW–Madison’s Division of International Studies in cooperation with the College of Letters & Science, intended to create the New University of Astana’s School of Humanities and Social Science by summer 2010. Schamiloglu will head the study, which will include other UW faculty and staff.
